Product details

ABC type fire extinguisher with MAP 40 powder

The FireSpray ABC type fire extinguisher is our everyday multi-purpose unit for homes, flats, shops, cabins and small offices. It is filled with MAP 40 dry chemical powder, carries the ISI mark, is pressure-tested at our factory before dispatch and is covered by a 5-year warranty from the invoice date. It comes in 1 kg, 2 kg, 4 kg, 6 kg and 9 kg; pick a size above to see its price (plus GST).

Which fires does it put out?

“ABC” is the three classes of fire the powder works on:

  • Class A: wood, paper, cloth, plastic and other solid materials.
  • Class B: flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, oil, paint and solvents.
  • Class C: flammable gases such as LPG and PNG.

It can also be used on fires in wiring, meters and appliances; switch off the power first if it is safe to do so. Do not use it on cooking-oil or fat fires in a kitchen: those need a K-type kitchen fire extinguisher and a fire blanket. Where powder residue would damage equipment, such as server rooms and control panels, choose a CO2 or clean agent unit instead.

MAP 40, MAP 50 or MAP 90?

The number is the share of active mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP) in the powder; more MAP means faster knock-down per kilogram. MAP 40 is the right grade for low and everyday risks at home and in small premises.

Grade Best for Product
MAP 40 Homes, flats, shops, cabins, small offices This product
MAP 50 Offices, schools and commercial floors ABC powder fire extinguisher (MAP 50)
MAP 90 Factories, warehouses, fuel and generator areas 6 kg ABC fire extinguisher (MAP 90)

For hospitals, hotels and premium interiors there is also a stainless steel ABC extinguisher. See the full range on the ABC fire extinguisher page.

Which size do I need?

Every size of this ABC type fire extinguisher uses the same MAP 40 powder, so choose by the space you want to cover:

Size Good for
1 kg Cars, small shops, store rooms
2 kg Homes, cars, cabins
4 kg Flats, shops and office floors (most popular)
6 kg Offices, lobbies, schools, warehouses
9 kg Factories, godowns, parking

For a home, one unit near the main door or kitchen entrance (not inside the cooking area) is a good start; our guide to the fire extinguisher for home explains placement. For vehicles, see fire extinguisher for car. Keep the unit on a wall bracket or a floor stand, and use a weatherproof box outdoors.

Effective range 2 to 4 metres

How to use it: the PASS method

  1. Pull the safety pin.
  2. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the handle.
  4. Sweep from side to side until the fire is out.

Stand two to four metres away, keep an exit behind you and leave at once if the fire grows.

Monthly check, and why we say replace, not refill

Once a month, check that the gauge needle is in the green zone, the pin and seal are intact, and the body has no dents or rust. A FireSpray unit stays factory-sealed, so there are no yearly refill visits. If the needle drops out of the green while the seal is intact, it is covered by the warranty and we replace it. All questions
Is an ABC type fire extinguisher good for home use?

Yes. A 2 kg or 4 kg ABC type extinguisher with MAP 40 powder covers the common home risks: furniture, cloth, paper, petrol and LPG. Keep it near the main door or kitchen entrance, not inside the cooking area.

What is the difference between MAP 40, MAP 50 and MAP 90?

The number is the share of active MAP powder. MAP 40 suits homes, shops and small offices; MAP 50 suits offices and commercial floors; MAP 90 is for factories, warehouses and high-risk areas.

Can I use an ABC extinguisher on a kitchen oil fire?

No. Cooking-oil and fat fires need a K-type wet chemical extinguisher and a fire blanket. ABC powder can splash burning oil.

Do I need to refill it every year?

No. A FireSpray ABC extinguisher stays factory-sealed. Check the gauge once a month; if the needle leaves the green zone while the seal is intact, it is covered by the 5-year warranty and we replace it.

What is an ABC fire extinguisher used for?

It puts out Class A fires (wood, paper, cloth), Class B fires (petrol, oil, paint) and Class C fires (LPG and other gases). It can also be used on electrical equipment fires; switch off the power first if it is safe to do so.

What does ABC mean in a fire extinguisher?

ABC refers to the three fire classes it covers: A (solids), B (flammable liquids) and C (flammable gases). It is not an abbreviation of a chemical name.
